Domestic development status of magnesium and magnesium alloy industry.

As an ultra-light metal structural material, magnesium alloy has a wide range of applications in aviation, aerospace, automotive, high-speed rail, communications and other fields, and is considered to be one of the most promising metal structural materials. As a large country of magnesium resources in the world, China is rich in magnesium ore resources and magnesium salt lake resources. Since 2003, China has been the world's largest producer and exporter of primary magnesium for 18 consecutive years. Actively promoting the industrial application of magnesium alloys is not only an important measure for lightweight structural materials and environmental protection, but also a strategic measure to give full play to my country's rich resources and reduce import dependence on iron and aluminum resources. Especially in the current complex and changeable international situation, it has extremely important strategic significance.

According to statistics from the Nonferrous Metals Industry Association, my country's primary magnesium output in 2019 was 969000 tons, an increase of 12.2 percent over last year. At present, about 45% of the world's primary magnesium is used to produce magnesium alloys, of which 70% is used in the automotive industry, 20% is used in 3C electronic products, and 10% is used in military and other fields. As shown in Figure 7-6, the number of primary magnesium and magnesium products exported by China in 2019 reached 451600 tons, accounting for 53% of the world's total output. In the deep processing products of magnesium alloy, the die casting method is still dominant, but there are some limitations, which restrict the large-scale expansion of the application of magnesium alloy. Therefore, it is particularly important to further research the processing technology and application technology of wrought magnesium alloy products.
