Is the car engine shell better made of magnesium aluminum alloy or titanium aluminum alloy?

Release time: 2024-05-22

Generally, the engines of automobiles are made of dead cast iron, and the barren and higher engines use magnesium-aluminum alloy. This is conducive to the lightweight of automobiles and has a good heat dissipation effect compared to cast iron.

The difference between titanium magnesium alloy and magnesium aluminum alloy:

First, aluminum magnesium alloy:

(1) Generally speaking, aluminum-magnesium alloys mainly contain aluminum, and a small amount of magnesium or other metal materials are added to enhance the hardness. Because it is a metal material, it has excellent thermal conductivity and strength characteristics. Aluminum-magnesium alloy has the characteristics of strong and lightweight, low density and good heat dissipation, strong compressive capacity, fully in line with 3C products for a high degree of integration, thinness, miniaturization, anti-crash, electromagnetic shielding and heat dissipation requirements. Compared with the traditional plastic shell, its hardness is several times as much, but the weight is only 1/3 of the latter. Therefore, aluminum-magnesium alloy is widely used in medium, high, ultra-thin or small size notebook computer shell production. In addition, the silver-white magnesium-aluminum alloy shell not only makes the product more luxurious and beautiful, but also easy to color. Through the surface treatment process, you can create a personalized powder blue and pink appearance, adding a unique charm to the laptop, which is unmatched by engineering plastics and carbon fiber. Therefore, aluminum-magnesium alloy has become the preferred choice of portable notebook computer shell material, most of the current manufacturers of notebook computer products are using aluminum-magnesium alloy shell technology.

(2) However, magnesium-aluminum alloys also have some disadvantages. It is relatively insufficiently strong and wear-resistant, and the cost is relatively high and the manufacturing cost is relatively expensive. In addition, compared with ABS, its molding process is more challenging (requires stamping or die casting process). Therefore, in the notebook computer manufacturing process, usually only aluminum-magnesium alloy is used for the top cover, and few organic models are completely made of aluminum-magnesium alloy.

Second, titanium magnesium alloy:

(1) titanium magnesium alloy material can be regarded as an enhanced version of aluminum magnesium alloy. In addition to the incorporation of different metal components, the obvious difference between titanium and magnesium alloys is the incorporation of carbon fiber materials. Titanium-magnesium alloys are superior to aluminum-magnesium alloys in terms of heat dissipation, strength or surface texture. In addition, it also has better processing performance, and its shape is more complex and changeable. The important breakthrough is that it is more resilient and thinner at the same time. In terms of strength and toughness, the strength of titanium-magnesium alloys is three to four times that of magnesium alloys.

High toughness means that it can withstand greater pressure and can support larger displays. Therefore, even with a 15-inch display, the titanium-magnesium alloy model does not need to reserve too wide a frame around the panel. In addition, the thickness of the titanium-magnesium alloy is only 0.5mm, which is half of the magnesium alloy. The half thickness can make the notebook computer smaller.

(2) Disadvantages: The disadvantage of titanium-magnesium alloys is that complex processing procedures such as welding must be used to manufacture notebook computer shells with complex structures. These production processes will increase costs and are therefore expensive. At present, titanium magnesium alloy and other titanium composite materials are still one of IBM's special materials, which is one of the reasons why IBM notebook computers are more expensive.
